Project Aims

The project brings together leading Danish and International expertise to address several outstanding issues in groundwater remediation of contaminated sites. It consists of 4 work packages related to specific contamination issues and 2 methodological work packages designed to provide state of the art tools for managing challenging remediation problems.

Specifically, the project aims to:

  • Develop new techniques for accelerated removal of contaminants form clays and low permeability media;
  • Develop bioremediation methods for treatment of chlorinated solvents;
  • Optimize methods for the treatment of source zones contaminated with complex mixtures of chemicals;
  • Develop and test methods for the stabilization and risk control of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and mobile heavy metals.

These 4 aims will be complemented by two broader integrating aims:

  • To develop characterization and monitoring methods to improve site assessment and technology selection;
  • To improve environmental-economic assessment tools.
