REGION HOVEDSTADEN
The Capital Region of Denmark is one of five administrative units in Denmark. The region provides among others healthcare, mental care, regional development and research for 1,6 mio. people – approx. 30% of the population. The region employs 36.000 people – mainly health care professionals – making it one of the largest employers in Denmark.
The region consists of 29 municipalities from the island of Bornholm in the east to Hundested in the west. The Capital Region of Denmark is situated in Hillerød, 40 kilometres north of Copenhagen.
REGION SYDDANMARK
Region of Southern Denmark covers an area of app. 12.000 km2 in the central part of Denmark populated by 1,2 mio. people in 22 municipalities. The main activity of the region is health, social services, psychiatry and regional development including soil pollution prevention. The region employs 25.000 people – mainly related to health care.
The Department of Contaminated Soil, who has 50 employees, has to prevent the citizen and the environment to the risk of soil pollution. The main activities are: discover and map polluted sites, investigate the polluted sites, risk assessment, remediation, and advice citizen how to avoid soil pollution and develop new strategies and technologies in collaboration with contractors and scientists.
MILJØSTYRELSEN
The Danish Environmental Protection Agency spheres of activity are concentrated on preventing and combating water, soil and air pollution. The Agency belongs under the Danish Ministry of the Environment and has some 300 employees.
There are six specialist divisions at the Danish EPA – Danish EPA Chemicals, Danish EPA Industry & Agriculture, Danish EPA Climate & Eco-innovation, Danish EPA Pesticides & Gene Technology, Danish EPA Organization & Legislation and Danish EPA Waste & Soil. The Danish EPA Waste &.Soil will collaborate within the REMTEC project. It deals with tasks relating to soil contamination and waste.
VIDENCENTER FOR JORDFORURENING
Denmark’s regional authorities have established the “Information Centre on Contaminated Sites” (Videncenter for Jordforurening) in 1997. The objective is to collect, process and distribute knowledge about soil and groundwater contamination. The Centre acts as a mediator between the 5 Danish Regions and it is the place for the exchange of current knowledge as well as future developments concerning soil and groundwater pollution.
In close cooperation with the staff of the regions, the Danish Environmental Protection Agency (Danish EPA), consultants and researchers current knowledge and experience are gathered based on a specific issue. The work is closely linked to actual requirements for practical solutions and to achieve the social and environmental expected tasks.
